Project Status: Ongoing

Project Brief: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) aims to develop the potential of tourism in the lesser-known regions of Bundelkhand (comprising 14 districts of present-day UP and MP), to create an awareness about one of the most important dynasties of medieval, and post-medieval India. Scattered across the entire expanse – and comprising important centres such as Orchha, Jhansi, and Chanderi – are the sites comprising 101 forts, palaces, and water bodies associated with the Bundela, Chandela, and Kalachuri dynasties.

The major focus of the project is to develop these sites in terms of accessibility, state of conservation, and available infrastructure / services, to create new tourism circuits or to connect them with those existing. Moreover, proposals for site interpretation – justified by secondary historical research – and appropriate reuse of the sites (for tourist amenities) are also envisaged as part of the project. Furthermore, the proposal for historic tourism circuit in Bundelkhand also aims for local socio-economic development by value analysis of these sites through stakeholder engagement, and generation of employment for the local community
